In Goa, Holi is one part of Shigmo, the spring festival of the Hindu community, so the day looks different from North India. Villages light the holi fire, and the colours come out the next morning, known locally as Dhulivandan or Rangpanchami depending on the village; in 2026 the state declared Holi a public holiday, and the 2027 holiday list had not been published when we checked in October 2026. The bigger spectacle is the Shigmo float parades that follow in Ponda, Panaji, Margao, Vasco, Mapusa and other towns, with folk dancers, drummers and illuminated mythological floats after dark. Alongside this, the beach belt runs the kind of Holi parties visitors expect: ticketed colour parties with DJs at beach clubs and resorts in Anjuna, Vagator, Morjim and Candolim, and smaller gatherings at hostels and cafés. Panaji's temples and the Hindu-majority talukas of Ponda, Bicholim and Pernem are where to see the traditional side. Good to know
- Use skin-safe, natural colours. Oil your hair and skin beforehand and wear clothes you can throw away.
- Do not carry colour onto the beach or into the sea. Lifeguards and shack owners will stop you.
- Play only with people who want to. Throwing colour at strangers and tourists is the most common complaint police receive on the day.
- Daytime Holi parties run from about 10 am to sunset, since outdoor music has to end at 10 pm anyway.
- Combine Holi with a Shigmo parade in the following days; the town-by-town schedule is released by Goa Tourism a few weeks before.
