Tiatr in Goa: Konkani Theatre Shows
Tiatr is Goa's popular theatre: a Konkani stage play in six or seven acts, called pordhe, with comic and satirical songs, kantaram, sung in front of the curtain between them. The songs take aim at politicians, priests and the news of the week, and audiences come as much for them as for the plot. The form dates from Easter Sunday 1892, when Italian Bhurgo was staged by Goans in Bombay, and it remains commercial theatre, with troupes touring a new production from hall to hall and performing at village feasts. The best place to see one is Ravindra Bhavan in Margao, whose 1,069-seat main hall is named after Joรฃo Agostinho Fernandes, the 'Pai Tiatrist'. In Panaji, Kala Academy runs the state tiatr competitions, held in its main auditorium in February and March 2026; that hall was due to close for repairs from August 2026, so check where shows are being staged. Konkani drama, a separate tradition, has its competition at Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir in Ponda from 15 October to 10 November 2026, with โน100 passes. Khell tiatr, a street-born variant, is performed at Carnival and Easter. This page lists tiatr and Konkani theatre shows across Goa.

Good to know
- You do not need fluent Konkani to enjoy a tiatr. The comedy is physical, the songs are catchy and neighbours will explain the jokes.
- Tickets are sold at the hall counter on the day and are cheap by any standard. Arrive 30 minutes early for popular troupes.
- Shows run for about three hours with an interval. Evening shows in Margao finish after the last bus to the beaches, so plan a taxi.
- Look for tiatrs at village feasts, where they are performed on open-air stages late in the evening.
