About Azad Maidan, Panaji
Azad Maidan is the open square in the middle of Panaji, beside the police headquarters and the Institute Menezes Braganza. A domed pavilion at its centre is a memorial to the freedom fighter Dr Tristão de Bragança Cunha, and a martyrs' memorial stands alongside. It is the city's traditional ground for public meetings, protests and commemorations, and in between it is used for book fairs, craft exhibitions and festival programming; the Serendipity Arts Festival staged folk music here in 2024. Events are almost always free and open. The square is surrounded by government offices and old cafés, and everything in the city centre is within a ten-minute walk.
