Diwali 2026 in Goa: Narkasur Night, Dates and What to Do
Updated 2026-10-12 Β· 6 min read Β· by the goa2go team
Diwali in Goa is celebrated at dawn. In 2026, Narak Chaturdashi falls on Sunday 8 November, and the night before, Saturday 7 November, is Narkasur night, when towns and villages parade towering effigies of the demon Narkasur and burn them before sunrise. Lakshmi Puja follows on Sunday evening. If you are used to Diwali as an evening of lamps and crackers, the Goan version, with its all-night street festival and early-morning rituals, is worth planning a trip around.

How Goa celebrates
Narkasur night
For weeks before Diwali, youth clubs and neighbourhood groups build effigies of Narkasur from bamboo, paper, cloth and straw. Some stand several metres tall, and the best are entered in competitions. On the evening of 7 November they are set up at junctions or mounted on trucks, with a small figure of Krishna ready to deliver the final blow. Crowds walk from one to the next through the night. Before dawn the effigies are dragged to open ground and set alight.
The morning after
Once Narkasur is burnt, families go home for the abhyang snan, a bath with scented oil and utne, a herbal paste. Drik Panchang gives the window for Panaji as 5:36 to 6:34 am. Then comes a custom particular to this coast: each person crushes a karit, a small bitter wild fruit, under their foot to stand for the demon’s death, and tastes a drop of its juice. The day’s first meal is fov, flattened rice, prepared several ways, sweet with jaggery and coconut, savoury with potato, or soaked in milk, and shared with neighbours who drop in. Houses are hung with akash kandils, paper lanterns, and lit with oil lamps.
Lakshmi Puja, Padwa and Bhaubij
Sunday evening belongs to shopkeepers and business families, who perform Lakshmi Puja at their premises and open new account books; the muhurat is from 6:29 to 8:30 pm. Padwa follows, and then Bhaubij on Wednesday 11 November, when sisters perform aarti for their brothers.
Where to go on Narkasur night
Panaji. The capital is compact, so you can see a dozen effigies on foot in two or three hours. Start after 8 pm and walk the city centre and the neighbourhoods around it. Roads are jammed; leave your vehicle outside the centre.
Margao. South Goa’s largest gathering, spread across the town’s wards. If you are staying on the Salcete coast, come in by taxi and agree a pick-up time.
Vasco, Mapusa and Ponda. Each has its own circuit and competition. Ponda and the temple villages around it are the most traditional.
Villages. Almost every village has an effigy at its main junction. If you are staying in Assagao, Siolim, Saligao or Benaulim, ask your host where the local one is and walk over after dinner.
Competition venues and timings are announced by local clubs and civic bodies in the first week of November. We list confirmed ones on our Diwali events page.
Things to do in Diwali week
- Shop on Dhanteras. Friday 6 November is also market day at Mapusa, where stalls sell lanterns, lamps, rangoli colours and the ingredients for fov. In Panaji, try the municipal market and 18th June Road; in Margao, the covered market.
- Buy an akash kandil. Handmade paper lanterns are sold on pavements in every town in the week before. Lantern-making sessions, when they are announced, appear under workshops.
- Look for Deepotsav. Goa Tourism’s lamp festival was held in Porvorim, Saligao and Mapusa in 2025. The 2026 edition is listed for Porvorim, with dates still tentative.
- Take children to see the effigies early. Go between 7 and 9 pm, before the crowds and the music peak. More ideas are on our kids and family page.
- Eat fov. It is home food, so the surest way to try it is through a host or a Goan friend on Sunday morning. Any public Diwali breakfasts will appear in our festival listings.
- Stay for what follows. Tulsi Vivah on 21 November is celebrated in homes and temples, Tripurari Poornima on 24 November brings the boat festival at Sanquelim, and IFFI opens in Panaji on 20 November.
Rules to know
Sound. Loudspeakers in the open are not allowed between 10 pm and 6 am under the Noise Pollution Rules. The state can exempt a limited number of festive nights, and a 2022 order included Diwali eve and Diwali, with permission granted case by case. We did not find a 2026 order when we checked in October, so expect police to enforce the 10 pm limit on sound systems at Narkasur pandals unless organisers hold a permission.
Firecrackers. The Supreme Court’s 2018 judgment applies in Goa as in the rest of India: only green crackers, and only between 8 pm and 10 pm on Diwali. Local authorities may add restrictions closer to the date.
Fireworks indoors. After the Arpora nightclub fire of December 2025, the district administrations banned fireworks, sparklers and pyrotechnics inside nightclubs, bars, restaurants, hotels and beach shacks. We could not confirm whether the orders have been renewed, but no venue should be using them.
On the beach. Alcohol, smoking and vehicles are prohibited on the sand, and lifeguards ask people not to swim between sunset and 7 am.
What is open and closed
- The Goa Science Centre at Miramar is closed on Diwali.
- Government offices and banks are closed on Sunday 8 November in any case; Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 November are restricted holidays, so offices are open.
- Restaurants and bars in tourist areas stay open, though many family-run places close on Sunday or open late. We could not confirm whether Diwali is a dry day in 2026.
- Markets are at their busiest on 6 and 7 November and quiet on the 8th.
- Beach shacks are still being rebuilt in early November. Not every shack will be open.
A Diwali weekend plan
| When | Plan |
|---|---|
| Friday 6 Nov, morning | Mapusa market for lanterns, lamps and sweets |
| Saturday 7 Nov, afternoon | Old Goa or a Fontainhas walk; rest before the night |
| Saturday 7 Nov, 8 pm onwards | Narkasur circuit in Panaji or Margao on foot |
| Sunday 8 Nov, 4β6 am | Watch an effigy burn in your neighbourhood |
| Sunday 8 Nov, morning | Fov breakfast; a quiet beach while the towns sleep |
| Sunday 8 Nov, evening | Lamps and Lakshmi Puja in the markets |
Safety on the night
- Go on foot and wear closed shoes. Streets are packed and there is broken glass and firecracker debris.
- Keep clear of effigies when they are lit. Many are packed with crackers and collapse without warning.
- Do not ride after drinking. Police set up checkposts on the main roads through the weekend.
- For burns, hold the injury under cool running water for 10 to 20 minutes and call 112 in an emergency.
- Pets suffer from the noise. Keep them indoors with the windows shut.

Frequently asked questions
When is Diwali 2026 in Goa?
Narak Chaturdashi and Lakshmi Puja both fall on Sunday 8 November 2026, which is Goa's public holiday for Diwali. Narkasur night, when the effigies are paraded, is Saturday 7 November, and they are burnt before dawn on the 8th.
What is Narkasur in Goa?
Narkasur is the demon king killed by Krishna. On the eve of Diwali, neighbourhoods across Goa build and parade huge effigies of him, then burn them before sunrise on Narak Chaturdashi to mark the victory of good over evil.
Where is the best place to see Narkasur effigies?
Panaji is the easiest for visitors because many effigies stand within walking distance of each other. Margao, Vasco, Mapusa and Ponda also have large numbers, and almost every village has at least one.
Are firecrackers allowed in Goa on Diwali?
The Supreme Court's 2018 order, which applies nationwide, allows only green crackers and limits bursting to 8 pm to 10 pm on Diwali. We found no separate Goa order for 2026 when we checked in October. Fireworks inside bars, clubs, restaurants and shacks were banned in December 2025.
Is Goa crowded on Diwali?
Yes. The Diwali weekend is one of the busiest of the early season for domestic visitors. Book rooms and return transport in advance, and expect traffic on the beach roads.
When is Tripurari Poornima 2026?
Kartik Purnima falls on Tuesday 24 November 2026. The state's boat festival at Sanquelim is listed for November, with the date still marked tentative.
