Christmas 2026 in Goa: Mass, Markets & Events

Christmas Day 2026 is a Friday, and in Goa the celebration starts on Thursday 24 December with midnight mass. Every parish holds one, often in the open air to fit the crowd; the Church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception in Panaji and the churches of Old Goa and Margao draw the largest congregations, and each parish announces its own timing a few days ahead. The build-up lasts all month. The feast of the Immaculate Conception fills Panaji's church square with a fair on Tuesday 8 December, the Serendipity Arts Festival runs from 13 to 20 December, and Liberation Day on Saturday 19 December is a public holiday. Villages hang star lanterns, build cribs for parish competitions and exchange kuswar, plates of neureos, kulkuls, dodol and bebinca. Clubs and hotels hold ticketed Christmas dances with live bands on the 25th and 26th, and restaurants serve Christmas lunches of sorpotel, roast and sannas. This is also the most crowded and expensive week of the year, with heavy traffic on the Calangute–Baga and Anjuna–Vagator roads. This page lists carol evenings, Christmas markets, dances, brunches and children's events across Goa.

Good to know

  • For midnight mass, arrive 30 to 45 minutes early and dress modestly. Open-air masses mean plastic chairs or standing on grass.
  • Book Christmas dances and lunches by mid-December; the well-known ones sell out.
  • Fireworks and sparklers were banned inside clubs, bars, restaurants and shacks after the December 2025 Arpora fire. Do not expect indoor pyrotechnics, and do not bring any.
  • Hotel prices peak from 22 December to 2 January. If you only want the Christmas atmosphere, the week of 12 to 20 December is cheaper and has Serendipity.
  • Use a taxi or walk on the 24th and 25th. Police set up drink-driving checks around the beach belt.
