Ponda is the hub of Goa's hinterland and its temple country. Within a few kilometres of the town are the Mangueshi temple at Priol, Mahalasa at Mardol, Shantadurga at Kavlem and Nageshi at Bandora, each with its own zatra and palanquin processions, and the 16th-century Safa Masjid stands on the Panaji road. Rajiv Gandhi Kala Mandir is the town's auditorium for Marathi and Konkani theatre, classical music and state festivals, and the Shigmo float parades usually open here. Spice plantations, the Butterfly Conservatory and Bondla sanctuary make it a family day out. Buses run from Panaji, about 30 km away, and Margao, about 18 km.
